The Kölner Platz sits in the heart of Troisdorf’s city centre and forms a key meeting point within the pedestrian zone. Once a busy traffic junction on the former federal road B8, it has been transformed into an inviting square with outdoor dining, seating areas and artistic water features. Visitors appreciate the relaxed atmosphere that encourages lingering while shops and cafés bring the surroundings to life. The square connects shopping, relaxation and local history within a short distance and serves as an excellent starting point for a stroll through the city centre. Families and walkers in particular find a pleasant place to pause and leave everyday life behind. Its central location in Troisdorf-Mitte makes the Kölner Platz a natural focal point of urban life and a worthwhile stop for anyone wanting to experience the modern face of the city.

History of Kölner Platz

Until the early 1980s the site of today’s Kölner Platz was a busy intersection of Kölner Straße and Klevstraße. Kölner Straße then served as an important through-road of federal highway B8, channelling traffic straight through the centre. A petrol station stood here to serve the motorised traffic. In the 1960s a tram known locally as the “Rhabarberschlitten” still ran through the area, and the streetscape was dominated by heavy car traffic and tightly built corners.

In March 1982 the Troisdorf city council unanimously decided to create a pedestrian zone. In 1983 the junction of Kölner Straße and Klevstraße was incorporated into the new pedestrian area and received the characteristic red clinker paving of the first construction phase. The former traffic junction thus became the Kölner Platz, a place for people to meet. This redesign formed part of a comprehensive inner-city renewal that had begun in the 1970s and permanently altered the streetscape. The wide through-road gave way to a car-free zone that offered space for strolling and lingering.

Between December 2016 and February 2017 the square received its present appearance as part of the third construction phase of the inner-city renewal. The section covered around 480 metres and introduced lighter paving, benches, trees and improved amenity. Municipal utilities and the wastewater authority accompanied the works by renewing pipes and sewers. In 2019 an information stele was installed that contrasts historical photographs with the present-day appearance and documents the development. The stele recalls the progress made since the 1970s and shows how a traffic artery became a place of high residential quality. Today the Kölner Platz stands as a living example of the successful transformation of Troisdorf’s city centre.

Highlights of Kölner Platz

At the centre of the Kölner Platz stand the Troisdorf water steps created by artist Victor Bonato. The installation of five steps and four spheres invites children in particular to climb and play. One sphere lies deliberately a little apart, as if it had rolled out of the basin. The water steps rank among the most distinctive artworks in the pedestrian zone and provide cooling and enjoyment in summer. Victor Bonato had already contributed to the two city gates that mark the entrance and exit of the pedestrian area.

Extensive outdoor dining surrounds the square. Cafés and restaurants invite visitors to linger, and on warm days the seats fill quickly. Benches and trees – including a twin-stemmed tulip tree and hawthorns – provide shade and a pleasant atmosphere. A circular area was planned from the outset for play equipment and is popular with children. Skill games and an open book cabinet complete the offer and make the square family-friendly.

The information stele on the square tells the story of the place with historical and current photographs. It shows how dramatically the streetscape has changed – from a busy junction with petrol station and tram to today’s meeting space. The modern paving from the 2016/2017 redesign is largely barrier-free and appears light and inviting. Shops and service providers nearby, including restaurants such as Mangold at the corner of Kölner Straße, further animate the square. The Kölner Platz thus combines art, recreation and urban life in a compact area and remains a popular meeting point for locals and visitors alike.

Opening Hours, Tickets & How to Get to Kölner Platz

As a public square within the pedestrian zone, the Kölner Platz is accessible around the clock. There are no opening hours and no entrance fee. Visitors can enjoy the place at any time. Surrounding shops and restaurants follow their own opening times, which generally run from Monday to Saturday during the day and into the evening.

Getting there is straightforward. By train, Troisdorf station is only a few minutes from Cologne or Bonn. From the station it takes about ten to fifteen minutes on foot to reach the pedestrian zone and the square. Bus lines stop nearby and connect the square with the city’s districts. Drivers will find parking spaces and multi-storey car parks in the vicinity, including at Pfarrer-Kenntemich-Platz or near the City Center. The pedestrian zone itself is car-free, so the final metres are covered on foot. Cyclists are welcome; bicycle racks stand ready on the adjacent Klevstraße. The central location in Troisdorf-Mitte makes the Kölner Platz easy to reach and an ideal starting point for a city walk.

Attractions Near Kölner Platz

Only a few minutes’ walk away lies Burg Wissem with its Picture Book Museum, one of Troisdorf’s best-known cultural attractions. The City Center and the former Forum offer shopping opportunities and further gastronomic options. Along Kölner Straße, known as the Troisdorfer KÖ, shops and cafés line the way. Wilhelm-Hamacher-Platz and Ursulaplatz with the city gates by Joachim Bandau and Victor Bonato complete the picture of the inner city. Further artworks such as the “Fat Man” by Karl-Henning Seemann and various fountains characterise the pedestrian zone. Those who continue strolling also reach the town hall and other squares of the renewed city centre. The Kölner Platz is thus ideally integrated into the network of Troisdorf’s attractions and invites visitors to explore the entire inner city.
