The Fischerplatz in Troisdorf forms the lively heart of the pedestrian zone in Troisdorf-Mitte. Surrounded by Hippolytusstraße and Am Bürgerhaus, the square invites locals and visitors alike to linger, stroll and meet. Everyday life meets art and events here: the legendary “Fat Man” sculpture, the weekly market and the popular evening market shape the atmosphere. As a central meeting point of the city centre, Fischerplatz is ideal for a shopping break, a relaxed coffee or an evening of street food and live music. The natural stone paving, benches and surrounding cafés create a pleasant setting that makes the square a true highlight of Troisdorf’s city centre.

History of Fischerplatz

The roots of Fischerplatz go back to around 1900. At that time the Fischerstraße ran through the area, named after a Fischer family who lived nearby. The Fischergasse was already mentioned before 1905 and was renamed Fischerstraße in 1928. With the construction of the Bürgerhaus Troisdorf-Mitte in 1978/1979 and the associated street realignments, the old road layout disappeared. The newly created square kept the name Fischerplatz in popular usage, even though the official designation for a long time was Am Bürgerhaus.

In the 1970s the former car park was transformed for the first time and paved with natural stone as part of the pedestrian zone. In 1984 parts of the first Troisdorf sculptors’ symposium took place here; the stele by artist Giovanni Vetere still stands today. In 1987 the bronze sculpture “Fat Man” by Karl-Henning Seemann caused nationwide discussion during the Troisdorf Art Walk. After a public fundraising campaign the figure could be purchased and permanently installed.

As part of the Zukunfts-Initiative Troisdorf Innenstadt (ZiTi) the square was carefully renovated starting in April 2014. The first construction phase was completed on schedule and officially handed over on 30 May 2015. The historic paving surface was retained and only smoothed. On 3 June 2016 the Main and Finance Committee unanimously decided to formally rename the core square Fischerplatz in order to improve its findability for events. Since then the name has been firmly established on maps and city plans.

Highlights of Fischerplatz

The best-known landmark of Fischerplatz is the “Fat Man”, the life-size bronze sculpture by Karl-Henning Seemann from 1987. Inspired by a 35-year-old VW worker from Wolfsburg, the figure stands on a stone plinth in front of the fountain by Wilhelm Valder and has attracted looks and conversations for decades. Next to it rises the stone life column by Giovanni Vetere, created in 1984 during the first sculptors’ symposium. Both works turn the square into an open-air museum of Troisdorf’s urban history.

Three times a week the Troisdorf weekly market brings the square to life: Tuesdays from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. with clothing and accessories, Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. additionally with a fresh-produce market for fruit, vegetables, dairy products and baked goods. Core times are between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. From May to October the square turns into the evening market on the first Friday of each month. Around 15 changing street-food stalls offer regional, Mediterranean and South American specialities, selected wines, beers and cocktails. Live acts start from 7:30 p.m. In 2026 the evening market celebrates its tenth anniversary.

Benches, flower beds with copper rock pears and perennials as well as the adjoining cafés and the StadtBierhaus invite visitors to stay. The square is fully accessible and integrated into the pedestrian zone, making it ideal for walks and spontaneous meetings.
