Wald- und Vogelpark
The Wald- und Vogelpark in Troisdorf is an idyllic recreational and adventure paradise not far from Burg Wissem. The approximately 21,000-square-metre forest and park landscape with old tree stock borders directly on the Wahner Heide. In the front section there are aviaries with around 15 different bird species and a focus on endangered livestock breeds, especially old chicken breeds threatened with extinction. A pond landscape with ducks and turtles invites visitors to linger. In the rear area the Troisdorf Beekeepers’ Association 1904 e.V. operates an educational apiary. The park is free of charge and ideal for families, walkers and nature lovers. It combines proximity to the town with the transition into the heath landscape and ideally complements a visit to Burg Wissem and the deer park.
History of Wald- und Vogelpark
The history of the Wald- und Vogelpark is closely linked to the development of the northern edge of Troisdorf-Mitte and the transition to the Wahner Heide. The park was created as a public green and recreational area in the immediate vicinity of the historic Burg Wissem. With the installation of the aviaries and the pond landscape a place was established where visitors can experience birds and endangered domestic animal breeds at close range. The focus on old chicken breeds such as Niederrheiner, Rheinländer, bantams, feather-footed breeds, Sperber and Totleger reflects the commitment to preserving threatened livestock breeds. The educational apiary of the Troisdorf Beekeepers’ Association 1904 e.V. has complemented the offer for many years and provides insights into beekeeping. The park serves local recreation and environmental education and is a firm part of the leisure facilities around Burg Wissem. The connection to the Wahner Heide makes it an important building block in the local nature experience.
