Haus Broich in Troisdorf-Spich is a former noble residence and listed historic building in the northwest of the Spich district. Originally a late-medieval moated castle of the Lords of Broich of Spich, the property today presents itself as a manor house in the late Renaissance style. It stands at Burgstraße 17 / corner of Waldstraße and is surrounded by a park, the Burgpark Haus Broich. The name Broich refers to a former marshy area. The building with its characteristic curved Renaissance gables and steep roof is a visible testimony to regional aristocratic history. Although it is privately owned and not open as a museum, the exterior view and a walk through the adjoining park are worthwhile. The complex documents the development from a medieval fortified seat to a representative manor house and is protected as a monument. For those interested in history and walkers in Spich, Haus Broich is a distinctive and attractive site.

History of Haus Broich

The history of Haus Broich dates back to the 12th century. The name derives from a marshy area. One Udo de Bruche was raised to the nobility by the Count of Berg; his descendants were vassals of the Counts and later Dukes of Berg for centuries. In 1412 Ludwig von dem Bloedesheym is recorded as owner, later Sophia von Velbrück. Presumably from 1522 to 1742 the property belonged to the Barons of Wolffen. Augustin von Wolffen had the present manor house built around 1620–1623 on the foundations of the old castle. Only the high cross-vaulted cellar from the late 14th century survives from the predecessor building. In the 19th century the moats were filled in. The Renner family added two tower buildings around 1880. In 1893 Laura Bouserath inherited the property; in 1897/98 the manufacturer Raymond Hoddick took it over. In 1902 Kommerzienrat Wolff from Elberfeld acquired the manor house. In 1970 it passed by inheritance to Christa Löwer, who sold it to the city of Troisdorf in 1971. After renovation the city used it as a youth centre from 1975 to 1988. In 1989 an advertising agency purchased the estate. The present park was created in 1980. Haus Broich is listed as a historic monument in the register of the city of Troisdorf.

Highlights of Haus Broich

The highlights of Haus Broich lie in its architecture and the park grounds. The two-winged main building consists of a narrow four-storey main house with striking curved Renaissance gables and a steep roof, joined at a right angle by a lower two-storey side wing. The surviving cross-vaulted cellar points to the medieval predecessor castle. In front of the house lies a large quartzite block, only about one kilometre from the Spicher Hohlstein. The Burgpark Haus Broich, laid out in 1980, surrounds the complex and invites walks. The former building outline is marked in the park. The economic buildings date from before 1867. Although the interior is not publicly accessible, the exterior view gives a good impression of the late Renaissance style and the history of the noble seat. The location on the edge of Spich with views of green spaces makes a visit pleasant. A walk around the property and through the park typically takes 20 to 40 minutes and combines well with further exploration of Spich.
