The Aggerauen in Troisdorf form a varied floodplain landscape along the Agger, which flows into the Sieg here. Over decades the river has created an idyllic and species-rich environment that is bounded and protected by the Agger dike. Wide meadows, remnants of alluvial forest, flood channels and renatured river sections characterise the scenery. The Aggerauen are part of the nature reserve and the SAC Agger and serve local recreation. Cycle and walking paths on the dike and along the bank enable walks and cycle tours with views of the river. During floods the meadows and fields are inundated and relieve the town. The proximity to the AGGUA leisure pool and the Wahner Heide makes the floodplains a popular destination for families and nature lovers. Admission is free and the marked paths are accessible year-round.

History of Aggerauen

The history of the Aggerauen is closely linked to the river Agger and the industrial development of Troisdorf. The Agger rises near Meinerzhagen and flows into the Sieg after about 70 kilometres and around 387 metres of elevation difference at Troisdorf. The name is of Celtic origin and means “flowing water”. For centuries the floodplains served as inundation area and agricultural land. In the past the river was straightened in places to control floods better and to secure the industrial water supply of the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Hütte. The Agger weir and the mill race are witnesses to this use. In recent decades the Agger has been renatured at several points so that a near-natural, meandering course with gravel banks and varied bank structures could develop again. The nature reserve “Aggeraue zwischen Lohmar und Siegburg” was designated in 2007 and is part of the European Natura 2000 network. The floodplain landscape remains a dynamic habitat and an important component of regional flood prevention.

Highlights of Aggerauen

The highlights of the Aggerauen lie in the diversity of the landscape and the good accessibility. The Agger dike serves as a cycle and walking path and offers wide views over the floodplain. Renatured river sections show gravel banks, steep and flat banks as well as high erosion edges. Oxbow lakes and flood channels harbour still waters with bank vegetation. The floodplain is habitat for numerous bird species and fish, including the largest population of wild salmon in Germany. At the Agger weir one can observe the cascading water and the mobile monitoring station for migratory fish; bathing is prohibited here for nature conservation reasons. The stone beach behind the weir invites lingering. Paths lead into the neighbouring Wahner Heide and along the town boundary to Lohmar and Siegburg. The Aggerauen are excellent for walks, cycle tours and nature observation. The proximity to AGGUA with views into the floodplains and the well-developed paths make the visit varied.
