St. Maria Königin
The St. Maria Königin in Troisdorf-West is a Roman Catholic church of the Parish Community of Troisdorf in the Archdiocese of Cologne. The modern church was built between 1960 and 1962 to plans by Stefan Leuer in tent form with a free-standing bell tower and served the then newly founded parish. Because of construction defects it had to be closed in 1971 and was largely rebuilt in the original form by 1974. The outstanding feature is the 14-metre-high main façade with window bands running from the floor to the roof edge, designed by Ludwig Schaffrath together with the Hein Derix glass workshops. The interior is a unified space without separation of sanctuary and congregation area. Altar and tabernacle of Taunus marble are works by Heinz Gernot. The church is listed as a historic monument and impresses with its striking 1960s architecture. It is a living place of faith and an architectural highlight in Troisdorf-West.
History of St. Maria Königin
The history of St. Maria Königin begins in the 1950s with the rapid growth of Troisdorf-West. In 1955 Dean Heuser proposed ordering the ecclesiastical situation. By deed of 15 December 1960 the rectorate parish of St. Maria Königin was established. The first pastor was Karl Heinrich Müller. Construction to plans by Stefan Leuer under the supervision of Karl-Heinz Schollmayer began in 1960 and progressed rapidly. On 8 December 1962 the church was blessed; the solemn consecration was performed by Auxiliary Bishop Ferche on 23/24 March 1963. Already in 1971 the church had to be closed because of construction defects: precast concrete parts contained too high a chloride content that caused the reinforcing steel to corrode. In May 1973 dismantling began. By 1974 the new building had largely arisen in the original form. On 9 November 1974 the renewed opening service was celebrated. The church today belongs to the Parish Community of Troisdorf and is protected as a historic monument.
Highlights of St. Maria Königin
The highlights of St. Maria Königin lie in the striking tent architecture and the artistic furnishings. The floor area of more than 800 square metres is spanned by a tent-like structure. The altar stands in the centre under the ridge; the congregation surrounds it in a large semicircle. The 14-metre-high main façade with twelve concrete ribs and continuous window bands was designed by Ludwig Schaffrath and forms a pioneering achievement of thick-glass concrete art covering around 300 square metres. Altar and tabernacle of black, white-veined Taunus marble as well as candlesticks and the floating cross were created by Heinz Gernot. The organ by E. F. Walcker comprises 15 stops on two manuals and pedal. The free-standing bell tower completes the ensemble. The unified interior without a separate choir creates immediate contact with the altar. The church is a listed monument and an outstanding example of modern post-war sacred architecture in Troisdorf.
