The St. Lambertus in Troisdorf-Bergheim is the Roman Catholic parish church of the district and belongs to the Parish Community of Siegmündung in the Archdiocese of Cologne. The neo-Gothic church was built between 1869 and 1872 to plans by the Bonn architect August Dieckhoff and was blessed on 22 September 1872. The solemn consecration took place on 21 July 1875 by Archbishop Paulus Melchers. The history of the site goes back to the 8th century, when a wooden proprietary church stood on a palatine estate. Around 1064 it was transferred to the Abbey of Siegburg. The simple baptismal font of basalt lava in the entrance area dates from this early period. The church is listed as a historic monument and shapes the townscape of Bergheim. After a comprehensive renovation it was reopened in April 2026. It is a living place of faith and an important part of the ecclesiastical and local history on the Sieg.

History of St. Lambertus

The history of St. Lambertus begins presumably in the 8th century with a wooden proprietary church on a palatine estate in Bergheim. Around 1064 Archbishop Anno II transferred the church to the Benedictine Abbey of Siegburg. In 1248 construction began on a larger stone church in Romanesque style. In the first half of the 14th century it was extended and Gothicised; the choir received frescoes that were documented but could not be preserved when the building was demolished in 1869. The old church had become too small and dilapidated. On 20 September 1869, the feast day of Saint Lambertus, the foundation stone of the neo-Gothic new building with western choir was laid to plans by August Dieckhoff. At the Lambertus fair on 22 September 1872 Pastor Georg Klein blessed the church. The consecration was performed by Archbishop Paulus Melchers on 21 July 1875. In the Second World War the church suffered considerable damage to windows and vaults; the tower was damaged. During reconstruction the interior was remodelled. In 1937 side entrances were added to the tower. After a comprehensive renovation the church has shone in new splendour since April 2026.

Highlights of St. Lambertus

The highlights of St. Lambertus include the neo-Gothic architecture and the historic furnishings. The building by August Dieckhoff with western choir shapes the townscape. The simple baptismal font of basalt lava in the left entrance area is the oldest surviving element and dates from the early Carolingian or Romanesque period. The church windows harmonise with the neo-Gothic style and show liturgical motifs as well as scenes from the life of Saint Lambertus and from the village of Bergheim, including the Sieg, fishermen, basket makers and farmers. Free compositions in the entrance area date from 1998. The neo-Gothic interior furnishings were originally supplied by the firm Bong of Cologne. The church is a listed monument and invites visitors to linger. The daughter church of St Adelheid in Müllekoven belongs to the parish. After the renovation the interior offers pleasant brightness and a clear spatial effect. A visit combines ecclesiastical history with the local fishing and farming heritage on the Sieg.
