Munich Toy Museum
The Spielzeugmuseum München (Munich Toy Museum) occupies a wonderfully unusual location: the tower of the Old Town Hall right on Marienplatz. A narrow spiral staircase leads up through several floors, past display cases filled with historic toys from different centuries - a charming small museum right in the city's touristic center.
History of the Toy Museum
The museum was established in the 1980s inside the historic town hall tower, which itself dates back to the 15th century and is therefore older than the neighboring New Town Hall. The collection spans toys from several centuries and illustrates how childhood, play and toy manufacturing have changed over time.
Collection & Highlights
On display are historic tin figures, teddy bears from the early era of teddy bear production, antique dolls and dollhouses, and an extensive collection of Barbie dolls from various decades. Climbing the narrow spiral staircase becomes something of an adventure in itself, particularly popular with families and children.
Visitor Tips & Getting There
The museum sits directly on Marienplatz inside the tower of the Old Town Hall, making it one of Munich's most centrally located museums. Because the spiral staircase is narrow and spans several floors, the visit is only partly suitable for visitors with limited mobility. Current opening hours and admission prices should be checked on the official website in advance.
Nearby Attractions
Right outside is Marienplatz with the New Town Hall's glockenspiel, and the Viktualienmarkt and Alter Peter, with its observation tower, are also just a few steps away.
