The Angel of Peace, perched high above the eastern bank of the Isar, ranks among Munich's finest viewpoints and is also a significant monument in the city's history. The gleaming golden angel statue atop its tall column is visible from large parts of the city and serves as a popular gathering spot for a walk with views over the Isar valley.

History of the Angel of Peace

The monument was erected in 1899 to commemorate 25 years of peace following the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71, which ended with German unification and the proclamation of the empire. Architect Friedrich von Thiersch designed the monumental overall complex, while sculptors Heinrich Düll and Georg Pezold created the gilded bronze angel statue, whose pose and symbolism recall classical victory goddesses such as the Nike of Samothrace. The site on the eastern Isar bluff was deliberately chosen to let the monument sit enthroned, visible from afar across the city - a typical element of Wilhelmine-era monumental commemorative culture, intended simultaneously to represent the rising royal capital of Munich.

Architecture & Viewpoint

The roughly 23-meter Corinthian column bearing the angel figure rises above a broad terrace complex accessed by a magnificent flight of steps, ranking among Munich's most popular photo spots. From the platform at the base of the column, a sweeping view opens over the Isar valley toward the city center, reaching as far as the towers of the Frauenkirche on clear days. The surrounding green spaces and proximity to Herzogpark also make the location, beyond the monument itself, a popular destination for walks, especially during evening sunset hours.

Visitor Tips & Getting There

The Angel of Peace sits on the eastern bank of the Isar and is conveniently reached via tram line 16 to the stop of the same name, as well as on foot across the Luitpold Bridge from the city center. As a freely accessible outdoor monument, the Angel of Peace can be visited at any time without admission, making it an ideal spontaneous stop on an Isar riverside walk.

Nearby Attractions

Just a few minutes' walk away lies Villa Stuck, the former home and studio of Art Nouveau painter Franz von Stuck, now open to the public as a museum. A popular path along the Isar leads both upstream and downstream, while Prinzregentenstraße, home to several further museums, is within walking distance.

Peace Monuments of the Gründerzeit Era

The Angel of Peace belongs to a broader tradition of monumental peace and victory memorials that arose in numerous German cities following unification in 1871, intended to celebrate the newly won national unity and the peace order perceived as lasting. Compared to many contemporary monuments that primarily emphasized military triumph, Munich deliberately struck a more conciliatory note with the name "Friedensengel" (Angel of Peace), placing peace itself rather than wartime victory at the center. The monument sits in the upscale Bogenhausen district, close to Herzogpark, a villa-lined residential quarter that developed from the late 19th century onward into a preferred address for Munich's upper bourgeoisie and remains one of the city's most sought-after neighborhoods today.

Sculptors Düll and Pezold

Heinrich Düll and Georg Pezold, who together created the gilded angel figure of the Friedensengel, ranked among Munich's most sought-after sculptors around 1900 and regularly worked as an artistic duo on public monument projects throughout Bavaria. Their collaboration was characterized by a combination of neoclassical forms with Neo-Baroque elements typical of the era, visible in the Angel of Peace as well. The gilding of the bronze statue, which must still be regularly renewed today to preserve its characteristic shine, is applied using traditional gold-leaf technique, making the Friedensengel one of Munich's most elaborately maintained monuments, its radiant appearance contributing significantly to its popularity as a photo subject.
