Bavarian National Museum
The Bayerisches Nationalmuseum on Prinzregentenstraße ranks among Europe's most important museums of applied art and cultural history. Completed in 1900 to designs by Gabriel von Seidl, the building is itself a work of art: each gallery is styled after a different historical period, from Romanesque to Art Nouveau, creating an unusually cohesive dialogue between architecture and exhibits.
History of the Bayerisches Nationalmuseum
The museum was founded in 1855 by King Maximilian II, who sought to create a comprehensive collection documenting Bavarian and European cultural history. After several relocations, the museum moved in 1900 into its current purpose-built palace on Prinzregentenstraße. Since then, the collection has grown steadily through acquisitions, donations and the consolidation of several princely collections.
Collection & Highlights
The museum's nativity scene (Krippen) collection is world-famous, one of the most extensive of its kind, featuring figures spanning several centuries and various European regions. The museum also holds significant collections of sculpture, textiles, furniture, ivory carvings and porcelain, including numerous pieces from the Nymphenburg manufactory. The chronologically and thematically arranged galleries offer a comprehensive journey through European art and cultural history from the Middle Ages to Art Nouveau.

The museum sits on Prinzregentenstraße, easily reached by tram or bus, near the Angel of Peace and the English Garden. Given the size of the collection, it's worth allowing plenty of time for the visit. Current opening hours and admission prices should be checked on the official website in advance.
