State Museum of Egyptian Art
The Staatliches Museum Ägyptischer Kunst (State Museum of Egyptian Art) presents around 5,000 years of Egyptian cultural history and ranks among Germany's most important collections of ancient Egyptian art. Since 2013 the museum has occupied a striking, largely subterranean building near Königsplatz, whose most visible above-ground feature is a windowless black cube - a deliberate architectural contrast to the bright neoclassical buildings of the surrounding district.
History of the Museum
The origins of the collection date back to the early 19th century and, like many of Munich's art treasures, are closely tied to King Ludwig I, who collected Egyptian antiquities. Over the following decades the holdings grew steadily through purchases, excavation finds and donations. After being housed in the Residenz for many years, the collection moved in 2013 into its current purpose-built underground museum on the edge of the Kunstareal.
Collection & Highlights
The exhibition leads chronologically through Egyptian history, from the pre-dynastic period through the Old, Middle and New Kingdoms to the Greco-Roman and Coptic eras. On display are monumental statues, sarcophagi, grave goods, jewelry and papyri bearing religious and everyday texts. The clean, dark-toned architecture of the underground galleries deliberately draws attention to each individual object, creating an almost meditative atmosphere.
Visitor Tips & Getting There
The museum lies just a short walk from Königsplatz and is easily reached by U-Bahn. Because most of the exhibition space is underground, many visitors are surprised by the museum's actual size. Current opening hours and admission prices should be checked on the official website in advance.
Nearby Attractions
Close by are the Glyptothek and the Staatliche Antikensammlungen on Königsplatz, as well as the Lenbachhaus with its Blue Rider collection. The Pinakothek museums of the Kunstareal are also just a few minutes' walk away, making it easy to combine a visit with other museums.
