The Fliegenberg in Troisdorf lies in the Wahner Heide and is a natural elevation with extensive sand areas and the largest continuous Calluna heath areas in the region. From here one enjoys a grand view of the Sieg valley and the abbey on the Michaelsberg in Siegburg. The soft, fine sandy soil recalls seaside beaches and invites walks. The Fliegenberg Tour of about 8.4 kilometres leads through heath landscape, forests and past ponds and is one of the most popular circular routes in the Wahner Heide. The hill is free of charge and ideal for families, walkers and nature lovers. In late summer the flowering heather turns the landscape violet-red. The Fliegenberg car park on Altenrather Straße serves as a practical starting point.

History of Fliegenberg

The history of the Fliegenberg is closely linked to the Wahner Heide and its use. The heath landscape developed over centuries through extensive grazing and later through military use as a training area, which preserved the open land. The Fliegenberg lies in the southern part of the heath and is characterised by nutrient-poor sand and gravel soils that favour typical heath vegetation. Archaeological finds in the surroundings document Stone Age and Germanic settlement sites as well as burial mounds and the Güldenburg ring wall. The Wahner Heide was designated a nature reserve in 1968 and is today part of the European Natura 2000 network. Around 700 endangered animal and plant species find habitat here. The Fliegenberg remained an open heath landscape through military use and subsequent nature conservation and is today a central part of the Fliegenberg Tour.
