Erfahrungsfeld der Sinne
The Erfahrungsfeld der Sinne at Burg Wissem in Troisdorf is a free sensory park that has invited visitors of all ages to actively experience perception since 2002. Initiated by the Kreativ-Werkstatt Troisdorf e.V. and inspired by the ideas of Hugo Kükelhaus (1900–1984), it promotes sight, hearing, smell, touch and balance through numerous stations. The facility is embedded in the park landscape around the castle and merges into the Wahner Heide. Touching and experimenting are expressly encouraged. The sensory field is suitable for families, school classes, groups and individual visitors and ideally complements a visit to the museums and the deer park. The stations are regularly maintained and seasonally renewed so that the experience remains appealing year-round.
History of Erfahrungsfeld der Sinne
The Erfahrungsfeld der Sinne was created in 2002 at Burg Wissem on the initiative of the Kreativ-Werkstatt Troisdorf e.V. with support from the City of Troisdorf. It is based on the ideas of the German educator and artist Hugo Kükelhaus, who intensively studied the importance of sensory perception for the process of cognition. Kükelhaus emphasised sensory activity in daily use and the development of the senses as the foundation of learning and experience. Artists of the Kreativwerkstatt such as Masoud Sadedin, Rolf Mallat, Tor Michael Sönksen and Jiri Necas contributed art objects. The stations were integrated into the existing park landscape and combine nature and art. Since its opening the facility has been continuously maintained: the barefoot path is refilled, the labyrinth cleaned and the scent steles equipped with fresh scents. The sensory field is a firm part of the cultural and leisure offer around Burg Wissem and serves environmental education as well as sensory experience for all generations.
Highlights of Erfahrungsfeld der Sinne
The highlights of the Erfahrungsfeld der Sinne are the varied stations that address all the senses. The large balancing disc challenges balance and rhythm. At the scent steles different scents can be discovered. The rotating disc offers a fascinating visual experience. Speaking tubes enable a “conference” over distance. In the humming stone one experiences the pleasant sound of one’s own voice. The stone labyrinth invites exploration and reflection on paths. The concrete sculpture “The Shoe” by Masoud Sadedin, the sense tree, material studies and the barefoot path with changing surfaces complete the offer. Further stations promote touch and hearing. The facility is designed so that touching and trying out are expressly encouraged. Artistic objects combine with nature. The sensory field is largely barrier-free and suitable for children and adults alike. Guided experience tours can be booked with the Kreativ-Werkstatt and last about one to one and a half hours.
